Wellington Korfball was born in March 2004 thanks to the efforts of Kirsty Prentice. Kirsty built a strong club with the help of a few Dutch imports and introduced the sport to a hard core of dedicated players.

The first inter-provincial event took place in November of that year when the Wellington rep team travelled to Christchurch. Canterbury have been playing korfball since 1997 and they continue to set the standard for korfball play in New Zealand. Auckland kicked off in early 2005 and there is now an annual National Provincial Championship with events taking place in all three centres.

The first international foray occurred in March 2006 with several Wellington players representing the North Island in the first-ever Oceania Regional Championships held in Adelaide. A number of Wellington players continue to represent New Zealand and in July 2006 travelled Hong Kong and Taipei wearing the silver fern.

In the meantime Wellington Korfball continues to promote the sport to people of all abilities and we're ever-mindful of our mission: to bring this great sport to as many Wellingtonians as possible!
